Bone grafting is performed in order to stop the process of jawbone deterioration.
Jawbone deterioration is often caused by everyday activities after losing a tooth, like eating and talking, but can also be expedited by wearing dentures.
When it’s not used and exercised properly, the jawbone will start to whittle away and become weak.
Having jawbone deterioration used to mean you were forever barred from getting dental implants. Now, it’s possible with bone grafting.
The process involves taking a bone sample from another source, often donated or synthetic, and grafting it to the deficient areas of your jawbone.
When you’re healing from your dental implant procedure, the implants osseointegrate with your jawbone. The bone absorbs and supports the tissue and implant, so they truly work like real teeth.
It’s the same process with bone grafting–essentially, the graft integrates with your natural jawbone and creates the perfect foundation for implants.
When the gum tissue that surrounds your teeth begins to wear away, it can expose the sensitive underlying tooth root. Food and debris can get stuck in these pockets and can cause serious health issues, including missing teeth.
Causes of gum recession include:
Soft tissue augmentation is similar to bone grafting. We take a sample of gum tissue from the palate of your mouth and graft it to the areas of your gums that are deficient.
This tissue is absorbed naturally in the healing process, strengthening your gums and getting them ready for implants.

Supplemental procedures are used to prepare the teeth, gums, and jawbone for dental implant placement, ensuring quality results. Patients who suffer from tooth loss, gum disease, or have worn dentures for a long time typically don’t have enough bone density to support an implant. Thankfully, Dr. Hermann can help you become an ideal candidate for dental implants with a supplemental procedure.
Many insurance companies will cover a portion of the cost of supplemental procedures, but some don’t cover preexisting conditions. We strongly recommend that you contact your insurance provider to get a detailed understanding of your coverage. If you’d like, a member of our staff can contact them for you to ensure you receive the maximum benefits possible.
